Environmetal protection in the mining industry

The Summitville Experience

This presentation discusses the abandonment of an open pit, heap leach mine in the high Rocky Mountains of southwestern Colorado in December, 1992, issues leading up to the abandonment, issues the abandonment created, and how those issues were resolved.  Involved in the overall reason creating the abandonment were the historical activity on the site years before the then current operator constructed his mine, geological conditions at the site, initial mine design, construction issues encountered in building the mine, nitial and latter permitting issues, insufficient regulatory control, inappropriate remediation activities and lack of financial diligence by the government in closing the property.
