2020 CMAEF Annual Report
2020 ANNUAL REPORT – CMA Education Foundation
Dear Supporters and Friends of CMAEF and our All About Mining program:
For CMAEF and for everyone we know, 2020 has certainly been a different sort of year.
The year started in the usual way. In November we participated in the Colorado Science Conference at the Merchandise Mart in Denver. It is a great event for STEM teachers who want to learn about what is new in their fields, network with colleagues and discover new educational resources. From our perspective the conference is an excellent opportunity for CMAEF to get the word out and to provide information on the All About Mining program directly to Colorado teachers. The conference is always exhilarating and we often get the opportunity to reconnect with teachers who attended the class in previous years.
As 2020 began, preparations were being made for our summer class and going along quite well when the pandemic began. It was a great disappointment for all of us when the country closed down, and we quickly pivoted to keep our people and participants safe. Like everyone, we were hoping this would only last a while, but alas, here we are 9 months later and still in a dubious state. In response we cancelled our summer 2020 program and decided to focus on other things.
Not knowing what our circumstances would bring in the way of in-person teaching opportunities, our CMAEF board member, Ryan Miles, spearheaded a project to offer a condensed version of All About Mining that would be made available completely on-line. In the process of building the curriculum we reached out to the Nevada Mining Association, knowing their educational programs were probably in the same predicament. What has resulted is an exciting collaboration between the two associations to create and provide a 16-hour online professional development course aimed at K-12 educators.
While we have not yet finalized the content, we expect to be able to offer this course to Colorado and Nevada teachers in the spring of 2021. We plan to continue updating and offering the course, virtually, for the foreseeable future.
For the 2021 All About Mining course, we are currently planning to move forward in the usual manner with our week-long in-person program. The course is scheduled to take place in June with three days at the Colorado School of Mines, followed by the 5-day field trip around Colorado. The in-person course and trip hinges upon CSM’s and the mines’ COVID19 policies and our fingers are crossed for a good outcome.
We are also moving forward with plans to improve and update our website, www.allaboutmining.org, and are excited to launch our new look in the spring of 2021.
As always, All About Mining needs your support and here is an easy way to give it. Whenever you purchase from Amazon.com, go instead to smile.amazon.com, choose “Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation” as your charity of choice and start shopping. It’s the same store as the regular Amazon.com site, except that smile.amazon.com will donate a small percentage of each purchase to the All About Mining program. Supporting the CMAEF is that simple!
Whether or not you are an Amazon shopper, you can support CMAEF in other ways.
We are proud to be participating this year, for the first time, in ColoradoGives. The ColoradoGives platform provides a safe and trusted way to support nonprofits. Each organization's online profile is screened by Community First Foundation to ensure specific standards of transparency. Colorado Gives Day is on Tuesday, December 8th. The online platform makes it easy to donate and we are delighted to be a part of this terrific community.
Finally, the CMAEF Board and I are always keen to get the word out about our program. Our promotional cards are placed in many locations and if you have suggestions for new locations, please contact me. In addition, I will be creating flyers that you can forward to schools and teachers. Ultimately, it is word of mouth that is our best promotional tool, so please, remember the All About Mining course when you encounter any educator.
Thank you, everyone, for your support of All About Mining.
